Building Trust is a non-profit charity founded in 2010. We believe in good design for all and that design at its core is about developing skills for problem solving and creating better solutions. We use these skills in tackling real world issues and in the delivery and design of our projects, having a positive impact upon people, wildlife and the planet. In only a few years our team has grown to include architects, engineers, planners, contractors and many other professionals that have a role to play in shaping our environment.

Description

Building Trust international have announced their 7th international design competition which seeks to find an innovative design proposal for a landmark pavilion structure made from bamboo.

The bamboo piece will be the centre of a Bamboo Festival Building Trust are hosting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia this March. The competition challenges architects, designers and engineers to provide a design solution which has the chance to shape the future of building with bamboo globally.

Introduction

Your chance to build a landmark structure for the Bamboo Festival in Cambodia. Building Trust have been given permission by the municipality to manage an event to promote sustainable construction and the use of bamboo in construction.

What?

We know its really exciting... Our latest design challenge is to propose a central temporary structure which will act as
a showcase for the material and as a gathering space for events throughout the festival.

We want the most creative, forward thinking ideas which push the already amazing portfolio of bamboo projects that are out there. We aim to build the winning design and capture the minds of the public, overcoming the widespread stigma that bamboo is a poor material and rmly set Cambodia as a place where modern architecture and traditional building materials can combine.

About

The aim of this design challenge is to:

  • Encourage and reward design excellence at a small scale which integrates function, structure, details and the need for exciting bold temporary architecture.

  • Research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing with bamboo.

  • Encourage the employment of sustainable design in all aspects of the proposal.

    Bamboo Facts

There are more that 1600 species of bamboo + around 65% are native to S.E Asia. It is estimated that it can make more than 1000 products and has countless applications.

As Cambodia modernises, it is important to celebrate tradition, nding new ways to use a plant which has such a strong connection with Cambodia.

Ideas

...Use your imagination.

  • What shapes can you create with bamboo?

  • What are the strengths of bamboo as a building material, how can you showcase them?

  • How can you promote bamboo as a sustainable material?

  • Are there traditional references?

  • What forms might react best to the

    environment and temperature?

  • How can you create a landmark

    structure for a low cost?

  • How accessible can the pavilion be?

  • How can the attendees of the festival

    make use of the space?
