Description

The challenge of inhabiting extreme environments imposes on architecture a twofold movement: on the one hand, isolation from the hostile outdoor world and, on the other hand, an intense conditioning of indoor spaces, to make them habitable. Designing artificial atmospheres for living raises a number of anthropological, physiological, technological and aesthetical issues that strongly challenge the material forms of architecture. We presume, however, that these characteristics are already being explored, at least partially, through ordinary hyper-specialized spaces around the world such as malls, nightclubs, fitness rooms or airports.

This special issue aims at gathering interdisciplinary contributions analyzing key topic areas and outstanding case studies of hyper-conditioned atmospheres in architecture. Articles studying the conditioning techniques, the history of experiments and utopias, the effects on the ways of life and perceptions or the spatial and material aspects would be welcome.
