The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is a center for research, education, production and outreach, with the mission of envisioning the future habitat of our society and building it in the present.
IAAC follows the digital revolution at all scales (from bits to geography, from micro-controllers to cities, from materials to the territory) to expand the boundaries of architecture and design and meet the challenges faced by humanity. IAAC is an experimental and experiential center where one learns by doing, through a test methodology that promotes real solutions. IAAC is open, independent and radical; inspired by the values of Barcelona, the capital of architecture and design, where urbanism was invented and where a local high quality and innovation-oriented research is connected to an international network of excellence in technology, architecture and society fields.
IAAC, beyond its educational and pro-research work, is an interdisciplinary and multicultural stable community that seeks permanent contact and cooperation among the hundreds of teachers, researchers, institutions and companies that have worked with us or that pursue the objective of provide solutions to the great challenges of humanity.

Description
The pervasive adoption of a wide variety of digital, real-time, and networked technologies, products, and services enable people, companies, governments, and even machines to stay connected and communicate with one another, gathering, analyzing, and exchanging massive amounts of information on all kinds of activities. The construction sector has been slow to adopt process and technology innovations, unable to apply a digitization among main categories of labor, usage, and assets. The area where its most lacking is providing digital tools to their workforce. Integration of technologies into everyday life reveal that tech has just penetrated the sector.
As part of the GSS18 program, students will define strategies for the applications of Advanced Digital Design Strategies as essentials mean for the change. Testing the combination of software and hardware students will explore real-time data capture, energy generation, storage and reuse, material adaptability, real-time management of time-uses and citizen-space interaction.
Global Summer School programme will run from the 2nd to the 14th of July 2018: workshops, lectures and prototyping will happen at the same time in different geographic areas worldwide.
Rewards
This intensive course connects each participant to ongoing research agendas in robotics, simulation, physical computing, parametric design, digital fabrication, and other relevant emerging design methodologies. Specific emphasis is placed on understanding the multi-scalar implications of design conclusions, thus creating critical research advanced on the application of new technologies in design
