Description

THE AWARD:

The International Finsa Award for Students of Architecture & Design 2018 aims to encourage and challenge students to explore and redesign the use of wood and other ecological and recyclable materials in construction. We believe that the future in construction should continue developing this way and know it is possible to achieve. The award considers the work of both teachers and students, all of whom will be acknowledged and awarded.

2018 EDITION:

For this year's edition, the social trend of the interaction between children and the elderly is our new focus. We are challenging students and teachers with the task of creating a space where both social groups can spend the day; in essence, turning it into a kindergarten for the children and a day care centre for the elderly! We want students to be creative in designing this multi-purpose space.

This year’s competition focuses on designing a multipurpose space which can be used by both children and the elderly; a space which comprises of children’s nursery facilities and those of a day centre for the elderly. As children and the elderly both require a safe leisure environment, the multipurpose space will meet the requirements of both of these groups. It is hoped that such a project will encourage positive interaction between children and the elderly who will use the space, including their carers and other member of the neighbouring community.

Participating teams must include at least one tutor/lecturer and up to a maximum of fve students. There are no restrictions with regards to the types of materials that can be used in the design of the project, and the use of FINSA products is not obligatory, but, remember that the whole premise of the competition is to use sustainable materials in the design process.

The project should take into consideration the following:

  • The multipurpose room must remain adaptable for future developments (for instance, if, in future, more children/elderly people wish to use the facility, the room must be able to accommodate them easily).
  • The project must promote the responsible use of eco-friendly materials and economic resources (be resourceful and efficient with your materials!).

Criteria:

The panel will judge the competition in terms of the following criteria:

  • The design of the multipurpose space must consider the needs of both children and the elderly, ensuring that safety is a priority
  • The room must be accessible for those who have limited mobility
  • The design must be an efficient one, using materials which are sustainable and which are recycled and/or recyclable
  • The design of the room needs to be appropriate for its surroundings (for instance, it should blend in and complement its location).
  • The design should encourage the positive interaction between children and the elderly within the multipurpose space and, should, in turn, attract locals who may also be interested in using this space.
