KRob Architectural Delineation Competition 2017

Description

The Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition — the world's longest-running architectural drawing competition of its kind — is returning for its 41st year. Established in 1974 by the AIA Dallas Chapter, the competition is named after architect Ken Roberts who was known for his talent in ink perspective drawing. The competition recognizes architectural ideas that best represent innovation and exploration of the medium in both hand-drawn and digital.

Eligibility

General

All entries must be of an architectural nature, and must be authored by one individual. Entries can be elevations, sections, or perspectives, and can be conceptual or final renderings. Exploration and innovation in unique techniques are encouraged. While there is no limit to the number of entries one can submit, submissions awarded in past Ken Roberts competitions are not eligible. Sketchbooks as a whole will not be accepted; a single, clearly marked page within the sketchbook may be entered.

Professional Eligibility

Each entry must have been executed while entrant is a professional in architecture or in related fields (architectural illustrator, educator, engineer, cg animation). Due to the versatile nature of the architectural profession, it is not required for the entrant to be employed at the time submitting work for KRob. All work completed after graduation from a design program is considered professional.

Student Eligibility

Each entry must have been executed while entrant was enrolled at an academic institution (either high school or pursuing a higher education degree in architecture or design). Student entries can be submitted no later than 12 months following the entrant’s final graduation date.

Guidelines on the eligibility for prize categories

Each entry will be sorted into the appropriate prize category, guided by the following rules:

1. The entrant must be currently enrolled as a student to be eligible for the student prize categories. Any changes made to a student drawing after graduation will make it a professional entry.
   
   
2. If the work entered was completed at any point after graduation from a design program, it will be eligible for both the Hand Delineation Prize and the Hybrid Media Prize in the professional category. Since architectural delineation at the professional level takes place in a variety of circumstances, whether in response to client demands, design competitions, or research, it is not required for one to be employed by a traditional architectural design firm or studio. Any changes made to a student drawing after graduation will make it a professional entry.

Guidelines on the eligibility for the Travel Sketch Award

• The content of the drawing must be architectural - a space, building, an urban formation and/or a landscape or garden. 
  
  
• Submittals must have been drawn in situ – at the place, in a bound or unbound sketchbook. 
  
  
• Any view, diagram and graphic notation should be clear. 
  
  
• Either a single image or a page combining different views, diagrams and conventions is encouraged.

Requirements

Entries may be submitted online or physically (see Submission Process for details).

Online Submission Requirements 

Each online submission must be

1. a single JPEG, PNG, or GIF image that is
   
   
2. at least 1500 pixels x 1000 pixels
   
   
3. but no larger than 6000 pixels x 8000 pixels
   
   
4. and uner 5mb.

Emerging Technologies Online Submission Requirements

Entries submitted to the Emerging Technologies category may include, but are not limited to, code and algorithmic drawing, short animation (in GIF format), and 3D prints.  Entries must be submitted as a single image or physical submission.

• Code and algorithmic drawing:
• Submit an image or artboard as a single image following the requirements above.  
• Please describe your process in the entry description field.
• Short animation:
• You may submit a short animation to this category in GIF format
• no more than 30 seconds in length.
• and under 20mb.
• If your work is selected for the gallery, a QR code will be printed with your entry so that your animations can be viewed on our website.
• 3D print / other physical submissions:
• Please follow the physical submission requirements below.

Physical Submissions Requirements (Including 3D Prints)

You must first register your entry online with a photo or scan of your artwork. 
If you are submitting a 3D Print that has not yet been printed, you may use a digital rendering or screenshot of your model. If your entry is selected as a winner or for exhibition, the image you upload in the online entry form will be used in the awards presentation slideshow and possibly other publications. Your uploaded image, therefore, should represent the quality of your artwork as best as possible.

Each physical submission must be

1. original artwork or high resolution print,
   
   
2. framed on rigid backing,
   
   
3. no larger than 30" x 42",
   
   
4. with some sort of hanging device,
   
   
5. accompanied by a printout of your online registration confirmation.

Each 3D Print submission must be

1. no larger than 1728 cu.in.,
   
   
2. accompanied by a printout of your online registration confirmation.

Works not selected for the exhibition must be either picked up in person at the AIA Dallas Chapter office by December 01, or include a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of work. While great care is given to the handling of each piece, the KRMDC Committee and the AIA Dallas Chapter assume no financial responsibility for lost or damaged work. (For those individuals who will be in Dallas during the deadline date, you are permitted to personally deliver your work to AIA Dallas during office hours (9am-5pm) no later than 10/13/2017.) Works selected as winners or finalists will remain at the AIA Dallas office until the conclusion of the annual KRob exhibition.  They may be picked up there after December 1^st.
