Description
THE CHALLENGEIn 3 words: Reinvent The Habitat.
In 119 words: we’re building houses according to one basic concept.
- Business as usual, minor changes and marginal innovation has brought us nothing more than insignificant variations on a tired and outdated theme.
- We’d like to throw a rock the size of a house in this lake of architectural and conceptual indifference.
- Not just for the sake of it, but as a quest to think beyond ‘outside the box’.
- To put the happiness of inhabitants first.
- And not the pride and egos of the established design order and city councils.
- At the same time, we aim to lower the total cost of building by 50%.
- Quite the challenge?
- Indeed. Help to start a revolution.
FOR WHO?
- An independent thinker. The inventor of a new material.
- Someone with a great idea but without the right connections.
- An outside the box thinker (or even better, a denier of the
- existence of a box at all). A spacial magician. A visionary.
- A pathological inquisitor. A construction wizard.
- A master of conception.
- An extremely contrary person. Someone who
- makes impossible things possible.
- The creator of something completely different.
- A crazy dude with amazing insights.
THE PRIZE
- No one-minute free shopping spree. No weekend trip.
- No car in the wrong colour from a brand you don’t like.
- But the ultimate prize.
- The winner takes it all. A plot. The permission to build.
- Future occupants. Feedback. Evaluation of the concept.
- Improvement. The possibility to upscale.
- And take the concept to the next level: mass production.
- Cool or what?
HOW IT WORKS
A Reinvent The Habitat challenge sounds great, right? But how does it work?
We’ll explain as best we can below.
Reinvent The Habitat aims to find new ways of living in your home.
A radical departure from the traditional ways of thinking about homes and constructing homes.
Namely, producing houses for half of the current cost, with 100% home happiness as the basic guiding principle.
That’s our mission.
We challenge you to present a revolutionary idea for home living. Go and lie in a hammock for a couple of days, or retreat to your attic. Come up with the best ever plan for home living in the Netherlands.
We’re looking for outliers, groundbreaking designs, out-of-the-box thinkers, free spirited engineers and authentic creations.
Anyone can participate!

WHAT IS HOME HAPPINESS?
Maximize home happiness while minimizing the cost of home living. Sounds great, but what exactly is home happiness? Thorb carried out intensive research into home happiness, in collaboration with market research agency Motivaction. The results show that there are nine happiness factors that jointly ensure home happiness.
The nine happiness factors
What really makes residents happy? That’s the big question… Market research shows that the following nine factors influence home happiness:
- Location
- Social Interaction
- Safety & Security
- Living Comfort
- Green Facilities & Garden
- Finances
- Privacy
- Space
- Technology & Design
Of all these factors, living comfort is the most important in determining how comfortable people feel in their ‘habitat’. On average, respondents score their general home happiness seven out of ten. But if you consider that you spend some 40% of your income on living costs, then surely this score should be more like a nine or a ten?! Are you convinced that your revolutionary idea will prompt people to raise their home happiness scores to a nine or a ten?
Then join the challenge, today!
